Around 60 enthusiastic singers gathered at the Chrysalis Theatre on Saturday June 14th for a workshop to learn South African songs, many written during times of struggle and resistence to the aparteid system. it was fascinating to learn the roles these songs played in the struggle for black freedom, how these songs had been passed from person to person in secret, sometimes using made-up languages in order to disguise their meanings from the authorities. The workshop was led by Craig McLeish with Eugene Skeef on pre-recorded video due to illness.
